- Check the battery ground strap first. One N54 owner found that was the real problem (source 3).
- A noisy alternator can be a bad decoupler pulley. Test it before buying a whole unit (source 4).
- One owner says a cheap aftermarket (ACDelco) unit made the N54 run badly (source 3).
- Rule out the battery first. Commenters say battery failure is far more common. The alternator may need coding.
